£7000 raised for Malawi

MEMBERS of a boys’ brigade have raised thousands to help build a kitchen in a primary school in Malawi.

The generous members of 3rd Kilsyth Boys’ Brigade fundraising efforts tallied at an amazing £7000 in just 18 months for the charity Mary’s Meals.

The money raised will go towards building a kitchen for the 1500 children at the Katete 1 Primary School in Blantyre, Malawi.

Members of 3rd Kilsyth Boys’ Brigade were set the fundraising challenge by their captain Christine Johnston and were given two years to raise the amount.

Christine Johnston, captain of the 3rd Kilsyth Boys’ Brigade, said: “As it was our 60th anniversary, we wanted to do something special.

“The fact that the members have not only met the target, but have done it six months ahead of schedule is testament to their hard work and dedication.”

The money was collected through bag packing at local supermarkets, a series of quiz nights, concerts, and donations from parents and congregation members at Anderson Parish Church in Kilsyth.

The young fundraisers are hoping to travel to Malawi in the near future to visit the school and in the new year will be continuing with their efforts to raise even more for Mary’s Meals.

Christine added: “I am so proud of what they have achieved so far and admire their determination to keep going.

“I must also thank the local people in the Kilsyth area for their support and donations. Mary’s Meals is a wonderful charity and the money raised is going to be life changing for the people of Malawi.”
