A CUMBERNAULD school celebrated its 10th anniversary with a visit from a very special guest – Archbishop Philip Tartaglia.

St Andrew’s Primary which shares a campus with Cumbernauld Primary was set up to cater for the fast-growing population who made the area north of the M80 their home.

The school first opened its doors on January 6, 2003 and this event was marked with a special Mass by Archbishop Conti, the Archbishop of Glasgow at the time.

Last week his successor visited the school to celebrate a special 10th birthday Mass along with Monsignor Patrick Osborne of Sacred Heart parish church.

And it was a proud day that staff past and present, pupils and invited guests will always remember.

Headteacher of St Andrew’s Primary, Mrs Eileen Mulrooney, who has been in post since the school first opened said: “I am delighted that so many people could come to this Mass of thanksgiving and that the archbishop could take time out of his very busy diary to come and share in this special time with our school community.

“The school has been marking their 10th birthday on the 10th of every month over the year, but this is an extra important celebration because this is the week of our actual birthday.

“We are incredibly grateful not only to the archbishop for joining us today but also to Monsignor Osborne for celebrating the Mass with us and to Cumbernauld primary for their unwavering support of us and the joint campus as a whole,’’ she added.

Archbishop Tartaglia said: “It was great to be able to visit St Andrew’s Primary on the school’s 10th
anniversary.

“I always enjoy the opportunity to meet the young people and their teachers and parents and encourage them to live out their Christian calling.

“I was very impressed by the commitment of the staff and the enthusiasm of the young people who have created a happy, welcoming and caring environment for learning,’’ he added
