Club’s bid to trace artist

Deirdre Matheson's winning Tam O'Shanter painting from 1983

Deirdre Matheson's winning Tam O'Shanter painting from 1983

THE members of the Cumbernauld and District Burns Club are hoping to track down the first ever winner of their annual school’s art competition.

Deirdre Matheson, a pupil at Westfield Primary, was only 11 years old when she won the contest for her wonderful painted interpretation of Burns’ poem Tam o’Shanter.

That was in 1983 and the club, who still have Deirdre’s framed painting, are keen to track her down.

President John Graham said: “She could be anywhere at all! We’d like to find out if she’s still in Cumbernauld. If she could make it, we would love to have her as our guest at the presentation to this year’s winner.”

If you can help please phone John on 01236 822547.

I can help with the artists whereabouts. I'm in New Zealand! Would have loved to come to the presentation. If anyone wants to pay for my airfare, feel free!!! Brings back a lot of memories to see this. Amazing the picture is still there after all these years! Made my day! Give my regards to this years winner!
