Cumbernauld Village's "Masonic Arms" domnino team celebrate their first trophy win back in 1980

A look through the back editions of the Cumbernauld News.

1997

Police in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth found themselves to be victims of their own success after crime figures were revealed. The results showed a rise in crime by almost 13 per cent, however this was not to be taken as bad news according to Superintendent Tom Buchan. He said: “A large rise in those reported for drug offences- 35 from eight- is a measure of the success of in our campaign against drugs.”

1987

There was good news on the job front after it was revealed that a £4 million pound electronics development in Cumbernauld could bring 250 jobs to the area. Talks were however still ongoing but it was understood that the new town was 99 per cent certain to beat off the competition, from East Kilbide and Clydebank, to win the project.

1977

Condorrat man Charles Mathieson got more than he bargained for when he went to collect his recently purchased second hand car. As well as his new motor, he received a free solid silver condiment set valued at £250, as he and his wife were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary in the same year as the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

1972

Unemployment dropped again in Cumbernauld, according to figures released by the Department of Employment. However the figures did not include the 265 workers who were made redundant at the New Town Factory of Burroughs Machines Limited. A spokesperson from the Department of Employment said: “The figures are going in the right direction and we are hopeful that this will continue.”
