1997
WE MISSED a trick but we’ll fight back – that was the war cry of opponents to the controversial A80 upgrade. They admitted that they had been outmanouevered by well-organised environmental campaigners who had persuaded the Scottish Office to sidestep the Kelvin Valley route.
1987
FORMER Cumbernauld teacher Avril Harrison was leading the way in computer graphics. The 28-year-old from Ravenswood had taught art in Our Lady’s High School but emigrated to the United States after meeting her husband Gary. He was a computer expert, she was an artist – and their designs were snapped up by industry giant Commodore.
1977
CUMBERNAULD would be the location for one of the most modern chemical plants in Europe and this would open in June. Air Products would be bringing 100 new jobs to a 225-acre site in Westfield. Already, several giant aluminium storage tanks were lowered into place. These were designed to hold 2000 tonnes of liquid nitrogen and oxygen. The £5 million plant would produce 300 tonnes of the stuff per day.
1972
A VITAL new carriageway would be created linking the new town to Cumbernauld Village in a £50,000 project at Wilderness Brae. The two level interchange would be located at Wilderness Brae and would take a year to complete.
