A look through the back editions of the Cumbernauld News.

1997

A LOCAL motorcycle enthusiasts’ club was receiving praise after raising thousands of pounds for charity. The Saltire Rally Motor Cycle Club had been fundraising since it first opened eight years previously and, following their Easter egg run, had just added a further £800 to the charity pot, which would be donated to two primary schools and Yorkhill.

1987

KIND-HEARTED pub regulars of Cumbernauld were hailed after a charity total was raised within only nine weeks. Originally the intention of, organisers, Billy Knox and Robert Galbraith was to raise £1500 for the Children’s Cancer Fund, which would then be given to Yorkhil. However following the success they decided to keep the collection open until June.

1977

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth District revealed a new plan that would help them crack down on the number of stray dogs on the streets. As part of their £5500 a year battle to keep strays off of the streets, the council looked at the idea of creating a “photo-file” to keep track of which dogs were stary and which were not. The idea was braded as “ridiculous” by a local dog club.

1972

A CUMBERNAULD teacher was leading the charge to get the belt banned in Scottish schools. Douglas Gilchrist enlisted the support of the New Town’s Trades Council as his first move. He said: “The strap is grossly misused all over Scotland and the rule of fear still operates in many schools.”
