This week in 1997

ABRONHILL High School’s rector was moving on – to return to his old stomping ground of Airdrie Academy after a four year stint in Cumbernauld. Hugh McCallum (46) would become its rector after an earlier stint as deputy head but said he would have happy memories of Abronhill.

This week in 1987

A MUCH-DISCUSSED golf course created in Cumbernauld by Seve Ballesteros finally had a name - Westerwood. The course would form the centrepiece of the multi-million pound development housing, hotel and leisure development. Seve said: “The name has a certain quality and when I learned that it was the name of the Roman fort on the Antonine Wall actually beside the golf course, that was it for me.”

NEW plays by local writer and artist Brian Miller were being performed at Cumbernauld Theatre in an exciting double bill of Juke plus Work and Other Green Fables.

This week in 1972

PROVOST Murray had a very special appointment to attend to – his own wedding! Crowds of Cumbernauld residents gathered at St Mungo’s Parish Church to see the provost marry local schoolteacher Margaret Keegan. The happy couple had a guard of honour made up from staff at the Cumbernauld Development Corporation and walked to the Golden Eagle Hotel hotel where they enjoyed a more low-key wedding reception.
