This week in 1997

CUMBERNAULD Theatre was in final rehearsals for its magical interpretation of Aladdin. Two additional characters invented by writer and director Simon Sharkey, who said: “Although it is based on the original Arabian Nights, I’d say it is more Disney than Roald Dahl.” Meanwhile legendary Marillion main man Fish was getting ready to rock the Allander Halls in the town centre - before heading off on a tour of South America.

This week in 1987

A CUMBERNAULD art school graduate wasted no time in taking care of business after setting up her own textile firm. Louise Roddick had received job offers in London but decided to take her chances with two fellow graduates of Glasgow School of Art in establishing Kaboodle in Glasgow’s Hope Street. Louise said: “We will do any sort of design or artwork- I would like do do more murals or interior work.’’

This week in 1977

A £6 million extension was finally announced for the town centre to coincide with its 21st anniversary. This would bring a total of 50 new shops and 700 new jobs to the town. The complex would be built on the site of the existing taxi rank and the work was expected to reach its completion in autumn 1980. The news was announced at an annual dinner of the Cumbernauld Business Association when Cumbernauld Development Chairman Donald Liddle said: “Don’t believe everything you hear. Phase 4 is going ahead.’’

This week in 1972

WHISKY blended in Condorrat turned black - in a blunder for bosses at bonding plant William Muir. Workers had had unwittingly sent a ruined consignment to New York. It emerged that £13,000 would need to be spent to improve the water supply at William Muir - after firm engineer James Robertson said that too much iron had seeped in.
