A CHRISTMAS cash bonanza for pensioners was branded pandemonium as huge queues for the cash sum snaked round the town centre. The gift came courtesy of North Lanarkshire Council but a rush to claim the sum saw some senior citizens flag. One stormed: “They should be giving us £100 for the time we’ve had to hang about. There are a lot of older people who can’t stand round for that long!’’
This week in 1987
LOCAL band The Thieves saw their fanbase grow after landing a coveted slot on Channel 4’s Famous For 15 Minutes. And they were set to build on that by holding a gig at Papa Doc’s. The band’s fans were told to get in quick - as this would be their only local live event for the forseeable future as their list of club dates grew. Admission was just £2.
This week in 1977
SUNDAY opening finally came to Cumbernauld Town Centre. The Kestrel opened its lounge bar for what turned out to be a healthy day’s trading. Manager David Barsanti said: “It was a great success from our point of view and was obviously welcomed by the public.’’ Mr Barsanti said that live entertainment would be the next step on this day.
This week in 1972
KILDRUM Parish Church celebrated its landmark 10th Anniversary with a special service conducted by another new town minister. Reverend Alan McPherson extended an invitation to Reverend James Maitland from Livingston. A big turnout was expected by the Kirk Session.
