Tragedy brings out the best in a community
By News and Chronicle editor Jackie Mitchell
THE measure of a community is how it responds when tragedy strikes. When the horrible accident on Wilderness Brae happened a week ago today, the reaction from the public was overwhelming.
Within hours not only were people asking for ‘something to be done’ they were organising online petitions, gathering signatures in local shopping centres and petitioning North Lanarkshire Council to do what it could to make this stretch of road safer.
NLC had the road reduced to a single lane by the end of last week, and Strathclyde Police had stepped up its speed camera patrols within hours of the road re-opening.
This week I am delighted to hear that crash barriers will be put in place.
Let’s hope that their engineers and planners can make this happen very soon.
Meanwhile our thoughts are with all the families affected.
