CUMBERNAULD Model Railway Group recently held an exhibition in the Link Community Education Centre, marking its 30th anniversary.

The group - plus friends from similar clubs in Falkirk and Kirkintilloch - laid out their displays for visitors to inspect and enjoyed a successful day.

Duncan Whyte of CMRG said: “It went very well, we had around 150 adults come through the door. We weren’t counting children as they got in free. People got to view layouts and this was the first show we’ve held with a trader, Doune Valley Models. MERGE, a mechanical engineering society also came along. They make electronic components such circuit boards to control signals and lighting.

“I would of course like to thank the ladies, who made excellent tea for our visitors. And also Catherine Drummond at Tesco, who supported the event with a generous donation.”

Duncan added: “This event was popular enough that we’re considering whether to do it on an annual basis so we’d love to get feedback from the public. It was quite a lot of work to put the display together, we were in for about three and a half hours the night before and constantly working on the layouts throughout the day.”

CMRG welcomes new members, and children are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Meetings are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, 7pm until 9pm in the Link.

Duncan added that this event was helping raise the profile of a hobby he and friends have enjoyed for many years.

“We had a couple of people sign up at the exhibition and others have shown interest. A typical thing we hear is ‘I’ve had a layout in the attic for years, I don’t even know if it works’ and we invite them to bring it along to take a look at.”
