CUMBERNAULD and Kilsyth Libraries are to host a range of events as part of an annual book festival.

During Words 2009, which will run for four weeks, Cumbernauld Library will play host to several high-profile author events, with a range of other family-friendly activities also scheduled to take place.

Kilsyth Library also has an exciting festival calendar, including a look at Scottish family history and a storytelling event.

Run by North Lanarkshire Council, this is the fourth year that the book festival has taken place, and the Scottish Arts Council is supporting it for the second year running.

Although it started out as a week-long event in 2006, this year it will start on Tuesday, September 29 and finish on Monday, November 2.

An NLC spokesman told the News & Chronicle: "We are delighted to welcome back Christopher Brookmyre, as he discusses his latest critically-acclaimed novel 'Pandaemonium' in Cumbernauld at 7.30pm on Tuesday, September 29.

"Also returning is Cumbernauld's very own Kirkland Ciccone, who's back this year by popular demand with his barmy sell-out 'Secret History of Cumbernauld' show in the Library at 7.30pm on Tuesday, October 6.

"Come along and listen to some classic tales at 2pm on Friday, October 9, in Cumbernauld Library. We are also delighted to present an extra-special event with acclaimed writer Jane Harris at 7.30pm on Monday, October 26.

"Best-selling author and illustrator Frank Rodgers will be visiting to entertain the young people of Cumbernauld. And look out for more fun activities on our Focus on Families Day on Saturday October, 10."

And Kilsyth will have its own share of events, with social historian and genealogist Dr. Bruce Durie presenting an entertaining look at the trials, tribulations and triumphs of researching family history in Scotland.

The NLC spokesman added: "Author of the recently-published popular 'Scottish Genealogy', Dr Durie's event is said to be an unmissable one for any local history or genealogy enthusiast. Join us in Kilsyth Library at 7.30pm on Tuesday, October 13.

"Our action-packed Focus On Families Day also returns to Kilsyth Library this year, on Tuesday, October 6.

"As before all events are free of charge and full programmes can be obtained from any library or at www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk."

Cumbernauld Library's telephone number is (01236) 618190 and Kilsyth's is (01236) 823147.
