Cumbernauld’s latest big statue

A THIRD prominent piece of artwork in Cumbernauld by acclaimed Scottish artist Andy Scott which was unveiled this week has not gone down too well with some residents.

The artwork was commissioned by Stewart Milne Homes as part of a plan to enhance the green spaces around their Linenfields housing development.

Scott who is probably best known for the heavy horse on the M8 and 33ft Arria sculpture in Cumbernauld was commissioned to create the Kelpies near Falkirk – set to be one of the largest equine sculptures in the world.

He has also worked with Stewart Milne Homes in the past, creating an artwork at Athena Grange in Prestonpans. Marlyn Boal, sales director of Stewart Milne Homes Central Scotland, said: ‘This new artwork by Andy Scott, creates a superb effect within Linenfields and we are really happy with it.

“The sculpture is called ‘Cobus’ after Andy’s own dog, bringing a lovely personal element to his latest work for us. As a company we believe that in providing artwork of this calibre for the residents in our developments, we are enhancing the environment and creating more beautiful spaces in which people can live.”

But local resident Matthew Sime disagrees, hitting out: “I and some other residents have complained to the sales manager: we were not consulted as to what would be erected on our estate.

“I thought – wrongly, apparently – that we in Scotland lived in a democratic society and would have been consulted about the sculpture to be erected at Linenfields. We have paid a lot of money for our homes in Linenfields and I feel the residents should have had a say in this matter.”
