Their Say

By Robin Versteeg, Conductor, Cumbernauld Choir

One of the things I enjoy most is planning programmes for the various Christmas events in my diary.

This starts quite early, so I’ll often find myself sitting in the June sunshine, sifting through piles of Christmas sheet music or absorbed in my hymn book! Traditional carols are a much-loved staple and they never seem to lose their charm, combining easily-sung, uplifting tunes with texts telling the Christmas story

Equally popular are songs with a wintry theme, like festive brass band pieces In the Bleak Midwinter and See Amid the Winter’s Snow, or the jazzier Frosty the Snowman and Winter Wonderland.

My own favourite is Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Both the melody and words are full of such warmth, romance and nostalgia.
