It was agreed at a recent policy and resources committee meeting to write-off former tenants’ rent arrears where the individual amounts owned exceeded £1,000.

The eight tenants lived in Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs, Twechar and Bearsden.

Most of the arrears were built up over five years.

The highest amount of arrears for one former tenant amounted to £4,930.

The report said: “Section 6 of the Prescription and Limitation (Scotland) Act 1973 lists the obligations which can be extinguished by the prescriptive period of five years. These include payments by way of rent under a lease.

“A number of former tenant arrears have subsisted for a continous period of five years or more, and as such are considered unrecoverable.

“The housing service has made provision within the housing revenue account to write off bad debts.”
