THE Cumbernauld and Kilsyth branch of the Young Scot's for Independence (YSI), the youth wing of the SNP, is urging young people to take part in the forthcoming Kilsyth by election.
They are encouraging young and first time voters to participate in the democratic process by going along to vote on January 31.
The YSI is fully backed the SNP candidate Dr Claire Fyvie, and wished the Labour candidate Mark Griffin well, stating th
at it was good for youth politics that a young man was standing.
Cumbernauld and Kilsyth YSI convener Stephen Bowman said: "I would like to take this opportunity to encourage any new voters in Kilsyth to get out and vote on January 31. It is really important that as many people as possible take part in the democratic process and that is especially true of young people.
"Clearly the forthcoming by election follows the tragic loss of Francis Griffin, but it is encouraging for youth politics that his 22-year-old son Mark is standing as the Labour candidate. The YSI would like to pay tribute to his strength at what must be a difficult time.
"Politics does tend to be seen as being unfashionable and boring but in reality it offers people the chance to get involved in the local community and bring about positive change.
"The YSI have recently been established in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, and we are looking to assist in bringing about the positive change of independence for Scotland. We fully support the SNP candidate for this election, Dr Claire Fyvie and have no doubt that she would make an excellent addition to North Lanarkshire Council.
"Actively campaigning in politics may not be for everyone, but voting in an election certainly is."
