IT’S the second week of the News and Chronicle’s great campaign to raise £5000 to sponsor a Guide Dog - whom our generous readers will get to name!

This week we focus on the vital work carried out by the Guide Dog puppy walkers.

They raise the puppy for the first year, ensuring the animal is well socialised and educated for the exacting role it will take on as a lifeline for people with severe vision problems.

Reporter Neil McGrory meets two families who have taken on the job of raising a puppy - and while both say it can be hard work, they agree that it also brings enormous benefits.

And as Emma Murton of Guide Dogs says: “It’s an essential role - if we don’t have puppy walkers, we don’t have guide dogs.”

Emma is also appealibng for volunteers in the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth areas who could care for a puppy full-time.
