Quick thinking on the part of a senior citizen averted a potential disaster when fire took hold at a hazardous spot on Sunday.

The incident took place at a flat in Kildrum’s Clouden Road at 11.30pm - when the elderly resident saw that a wheelie bin was alight.

Police cannot outrule that the fire was started maliciously - and are stressing the location of the fire could have prompted a tragedy.

For the blaze bordered a gas mains box in a move that could have caused an explosion.

Thankfully, the householder succeeded in quickly extinguishing the fire - and was uninjured in the process.

Now police are looking for witnesses to this incident.

Anyone who can help is asked to call 101. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be called free and in confidence on 0800 555 111.
