A radio DJ is urging Scots to get worrying moles checked out after one on her back turned out to be Stage 3 melanoma.

A year since 32-year-old Diane Knox’s shock diagnosis, she is backing the nationwide mole awareness campaign by the not-for-profit Nuffield Health Glasgow Hospital which aims to encourage Scots to ‘Be Mole Aware’.

The campaign highlights the importance of regular self-examination, giving tips and advice on what to look out for. A web page www.nuffieldhealth.com/hospitals/glasgow/be-mole-aware provides important information.

Diane, who works for Clyde 1, found a tiny, pinhead spot one night. But the spot continued to grow and four months later she was told she had skin cancer.

“I had a 5cm radius of skin around the mole removed along with lymph nodes in my neck and underarm,” she said.

“Thankfully, it hadn’t spread so I didn’t require chemotherapy or radiotherapy. I’m one of the lucky ones.”

Cases of skin cancer in Scotland have increased by more than 30 per cenrt in the past decade. Early detection can be vital and can significantly increase survival rates.
