The programme is packed, kicking off on Saturday, August 31 with an official launch party. Running 10am-2pm at The Avenue, Radio Clyde DJ Gary Marshall is joined by mall mascots Newton and Fearn for facepainting and balloon modelling — as well as info on the groups involved. Mearns Kirk will be running a family fun day — noon till 4pm — and over at Broom church there’s a talent show, allowing younger members of the community to strut their stuff.

There are events running throughout the week, from Tuesday’s talk on the history of Rouken Glen to behind the scenes at Mearns Kirk – Revealed on Wednesday.

Events run until the Sunday (September 8), and for joint chairs Andy and Aileen Watson, community week is all about showcasing the variety on offer in Newton Mearns.

Aileen told The Extra: “It’s great fun to see the many organisations across Newton Mearns getting together and showing community spirit, and we hope residents will come along, meet the groups involved and join in the fun.”

There are two charity partners for the event; AIDS Africa and local group East Renfrewshire Good Causes. Rag dolls will be sold at the opening event, with £1 per doll going to the charities — and ERGC founder Russell Macmillan (a Newton Mearns man himself) is delighted by the support.
