Cumbernauld has been hit by a jobs blow after a key employer in Westfield announced it had earmarked a giant warehouse premises for closure.

Bosses at DHL and Marks & Spencers have confirmed that they will shut their warehouse in Orcharton Road in the first half of 2014.

No confirmation has been given on the scale of the job losses.

The chain believes that the centre is under-utilised, and restructuring will see operations transferred to a giant new distribution centre in Leicestershire.

A consultation process is now underway to decide if a cross-docking station can be retained at the site, which employs 270 workers.

A spokesman for DHL confirmed the newsand said: “Staff have been informed of the decision and they will shortly enter into consultation with site representatives to discuss their options. DHL will continue to work closely with Marks and Spencer to mitigate disruption to our colleagues during this difficult time.”

A spokesperson for Marks & Spencer said: “We understand that it will be an unsettling time for all involved and will do all we can to offer support throughout the process.”
