Callum invention strikes a chord with gardeners

A STUDENT has invented a tool which will make life a lot easier for keen gardeners with restricted mobility.

Callum Stewart, who is studying engineering at the University of Strathclyde, has developed the multi-purpose garden tool as part of his fourth year project.

The invention removes the need for bending and kneeling and transfers the physical aspects into the mechanical movement in the tool head.

The 21-year-old former Kilsyth Academy pupil, who lives in Valleybank, Banton, said: “I initially chose the topic following a conversation with my gran, who told me she would still like to do some of the gardening tasks but now struggles physically.

“I found through research that there are no products on the market that carry out this multi-purpose role. I also discovered that 90 per cent of people who are 65 or over have access to a garden – demonstrating a clear market for the product.

“I realised that by developing this multi-purpose tool, it would not only help people to get back to enjoying spending time in the garden, but also provide a level of freedom and independence.”
