Carbrain soldier honoured

A CUMBERNAULD man has been honoured in the Queen's New Years Honours List with a MBE.

Major Stephen Sutherland (38) who originally hails from Carbrain is a bomb disposal expert with the Royal Logistics Corps. He is a former pupil of Our Lady's High School.

His tours of duty have included stints in Northern Ireland, Kenya, Cyprus, Iraq and Afghanistan. Currently based in Swindon, Major Sutherland is married with two children.

Proud mum Carol, who lives in Balloch, said: ''We are absolutely delighted and so proud. Stephen joined the Army Cadets down in Glencryan Road and from that point he just never wanted to do anything else.

"It is wonderful to see him get that level of recognition," added Carol.

When the News caught up with Major Sutherland in Swindon he revealed that the honour had caught him unawares.

''I was stunned and very pleased," he said.

"What you have got to remember though is that I was working with other people so I really feel that this is for them too," added Major Sutherland.
