Council roll out new bins for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth

CUMBERNAULD residents will have another bin to add to their kerbside collection – after council bosses strive to meet exacting Scottish Government targets on food waste.

Staff from North Lanarkshire Council are now delivering lined plastic containers across the town which will hold leftover scraps – which will ultimately converted into fertiliser.

Billed as being clean and easy to use, the new system also aims to crack down on harmful greenhouse gases which are released from decomposing food in landfill sites.

The five-day distribution period for the bins will start next Wednesday. (November 14)

Councillor Helen McKenna, who is convener of the environmental services committee, said: “By recycling food waste we can divert around 5,000 tonnes more waste from landfill every year, which helps us achieve the ambitious recycling targets set for us and saves money in landfill taxes,”

“For residents, it involves tipping any unused, leftover food or scraps into a small lined kitchen caddy. Housheolders then tie the liner and place it into a larger outside caddy which will be collected from the kerbside every week,” she said.
