Courses launched to match skills to jobs

A NEW programme which aims to improve job prospects for students by matching their skills with local employers’ needs has been launched by Cumbernauld College.

The college has been awarded £440,000 in funding from Skills Development Scotland (SDS) to offer the New College Learning Programmes which are targeted at those aged 16 to 24.

Business administration, retail, hospitality and care, are some of the programmes on offer and have been chosen because they match local employment opportunities.

These short courses will focus on the long-term employability of learners and will consist of a vocational element as well as work experience placements.

Applications are now open for the New College Learning Programmes which will commence at Cumbernauld College later this month.

Cumbernauld College principal Martin McGuire said: “The New College Learning Programmes are a welcomed addition to Cumbernauld College’s curriculum.

“These courses have been specially chosen to meet local employment needs and will provide our students with valuable vocational skills as well as enhancing their employment prospects.”

Students will spend seven weeks in college gaining a number of vocational qualifications before moving on to a six week work placement.

Around three-quarters of the new places are for 16 to 19 year olds.
