THE CROWN Office has received a report into the tragic deaths of three men killed in a road smash at the Wilderness Brae.

The lunchtime crash on August 1 claimed the lives of father-of-four Gordon McRae (45) of Airdrie, Neil Harold (34) who had a two year old son , plus 30-year-old Greig Brown from Myvot Avenue in Condorrat.

Mr McRae and Mr Harold were colleagues at engineering firm Nallatech in Wardpark and the pair were travelling together when Mr Brown’s vehicle crossed the central reservation and hit their car head-on.

All three men died at the scene. Their deaths sparked an outpouring of grief in the town, which quickly gave way to anger from road safety campaigners.

Thousands of locals supported a Facebook page and petition in a bid to have a crash barrier erected at the scene which had been the location of two fatalities in 2007. This claimed the lives of local man Frank Keenan (51) and 16-year-old Sandy Warnock and it was Frank’s stepdaughter Sarah Dougan (21) who was one of the key figures behind the highly charged campaign.

Now police have submitted a report to the procurator fiscal who will consider what action will be taken.

After the triple tragedy, road bosses from North Lanarkshire Council resurfaced the road with a ‘high friction grip’

They also installed the barriers that the public had demanded, in a bid to increase road safety.

However, the council would not be drawn on the possible consequences of the report which was submitted last week.

A spokesman said: “It would be inappropriate for us to make any comment ahead of the Crown Office deliberations.”
