Cumbernauld’s hour in the Olympic spotlight
13/06/12. John Devlin. CUMBERNAULD, Olympic torch in Cumbernauld (North Carbrain).
A MOMENT to shine – and a lifetime of memories for the thousands who turned out to see the Olympic Torch Relay pass through Cumbernauld.
Because a genuinely once-in-a-lifetime experience was spectacularly there for the taking as the flame was conveyed through the town by four special torchbearers
One was Bonnybridge woman Christine Moroney who is blind and who walked with the help of an assistant. The rest were Uphall based athletics organiser Ron Hunter, World Judo Champion from Stirling Josh Gavin and a guest torchbearer from the Russian city of Samara, Marina Chikuleava.
Local schoolchildren lilned the route in their thousands, and North Lanarkshire Council estimated over 6000 in total were in Carbrain to cheers the Olympic torch through the town.
We’ll have a fantastic spread of photos in the News and Chronicle next week, it’s an issue not to be missed, on sale on June 20.
