Cuts council under conference fire

A COUNCIL which is attempting to make savings of £73 million in a cuts package sent four of its employees to a conference for the leisure industry in Birmingham.

Staff from NL Leisure trust spent two days in the city before returning from their all-expenses paid trip by car.

The trust has already hit the headlines locally after bosses reduced access to the Tryst Pool – amidst claims that they were only interested in pocketing hire charges from Cumbernauld Swimming Club and fees from swimming lessons.

News of the trip has leaked out after a source contacted this newspaper, wanting to know how the council could justify the trip which cost approximately £1000 of council taxpayers’ cash.

The source said: “Maybe they should be spending the public money on more useful things to benefit the North Lanarkshire community rather than an unjustifiable wee jolly in Birmingham.

“It’s shameful,’’ added the source.
