Dead miner played for Celtic

ONE of the dead, Donald Weir from Kilsyth, had previously had an Old Firm football career.

Inside-forward Donald Weir signed for Celtic in November 1948.

Donald had to wait until the following April to make his Hoops debut, a 2-1 home league defeat to Third Lanark.

A mainly reserve player, his greatest Celtic moment came with a top drawer goal against Rangers on September 23, 1950. Celtic won 3-2.

Donald was freed in May 1952 after seven appearances and two goals. He then had spells with Portadown and Forfar.
