Expert's verdict
SINGER Peter Morrison was fascinated by Helen Macdonald's song "We're a' Scottish Here."
He had never heard of the song, and was intrigued to learn that Andrew Carnegie loved it so much that he wrote to Helen expressing his appreciation.
"The first thing that impresses me is the words," he said. "Lots of people can write a simple melody but you have to have good words.
"The sentiment of the song and the vocabulary sets it apart from some of the more banal songs you hear. I like the language, the sentiment is good but it's not bung full of cliches. It's hard sometimes when you're writing a song about Scotland to avoid that."
Peter added that he would love to track down the music and suggested he might pass the words on to Alastair McDonald, his co-presenter on TV's Songs of Scotland, who, he was sure, would enjoy it.
The only person he could think of who might have known of the existence of the song was the late Jimmy Logan, who was an avid collector of such snippets of Scottish music hall history.
