Funerals of the Auchengeich victims

SIX of the victims were buried at Kilsyth Cemetery amidst what the Chronicle described as "moving scenes".

Requiem masses were held at Croy Holy Cross Church for Condorrat men John Mulholland and Patrick Harvey.

"The bodies of three other victims with strong Croy connections - Frank Broadley, Gerald Martin and Frank Kiernan - were brought from St Barbara's Church, Muirhead and the funeral procession wended its way with solemn dignity to the cemetery headed by Croy Parish Band," said the paper.

"Large crowds lined the route, shops were shut, blinds were drawn. The road was closed for over an hour. Police handled the situation very skilfully and there was no confusion despite the thousands of people who turned out to pay their last respects."

The Chronicle reporter added: "The funeral of Donald Weir, Kilsyth, formerly well known as a footballer, took place later in the afternoon to Kilsyth Cemetery. A large number of mourners followed the cortege from his home at St Andrew's Place."

Alexander Beattie and John Muir were laid to rest in Eastfield Cemetery. The Chronicle noted "signs of deep mourning" in Condorrat. Crowds lined the route from the church to the cemetery.

THE local mining community was already in mourning when the disaster happened. Three days before the tragedy a Kilsyth miner was killed at Dullatur Colliery.

A sad irony saw the Chronicle published on the very day of the Auchengeich disaster report on the death of Daniel McGinley, 31, of Hamill Drive.

"He had just got his machine going after some difficulty when a large slab of coal fell on him," the paper said.

"Deceased leaves a widow and three young children to whom the deepest sympathy of the community goes out in their sore loss."
