Get a grip

COACH DRIVERS refused to jeopardise the safety of schoolchildren travelling to a local secondary on an an ungritted uphill stretch – and transport bosses are now refusing to pay them.

Staff from Dunn’s Buses and MacDonald Coaches decided against driving their young passengers all the way to the designated drop off point of Our Lady’s High School last week because they feared that a tragedy could occur on untreated black ice.

Instead they decided that the hill should not be tackled and that their young charges should be deposited at a bus stop on the main road. However, this breaches current safety rules.

A contract signed by both firms does not allow their coaches to alight at any other part of the school, even on grounds of safety.

Consequently both firms have come under fire from Strathclyde Passenger Transport and North Lanarkshire Council – and are having their wages docked.
