Golfers flee from course after Kilsyth quarry blast

TERRIFIED golfers have claimed their lives were put at risk after a ‘controlled’ quarry explosion resulted in granite rocks the size of a human fist falling all over a Kilsyth golf course.
The controlled explosion at the Beltmoss Quarry, which is owned by Patersons Quarries Ltd, happened at Kilsyth Lennox Golf Club at around noon on Thursday, February 7.
Golfers say they were making their way round the course when they heard a bang and felt the ground vibrating.
They say that following the explosion, rocks and debris fell all over the course.
The News and Chronicle understands that the quarry has a controlled explosion once a week at the course, and golfers are usually told beforehand while staff working for Patersons Quarries form a safety perimeter around the area.
Stephen Law, from Jarvie Crescent in Kilsyth, was at the 17th hole when the explosion happened, and he was unaware that is was scheduled.
He said: “I heard a huge bang then I felt the ground vibrating. Debris came and covered everywhere around me, it could have killed someone.
“I did not know what it was at first so I began running towards the clubhouse. Everyone was fearing for their lives.”
