Jubilee tree gift could yield award for Cumbernauld

Saplings ready for re-planting

CUMBERNAULD has received a special gift for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – in a move that could land the town another Beautiful Scotland award.

Fans of greenery will be glad to learn that the Woodland Trust has gifted a pack of 105 new trees to Cumbernauld Environmental Society – which will allow the group to build on the Silver award they helped win last year.

The saplings, which will promote the Jubilee Woods project, will be planted in March by volunteers.

It is hoped that six million trees can be planted across the United Kingdom in celebration of this landmark anniversary.

The scheme has been funded by The Peoples’ Postcode Lottery.

Group spokesman Adam Smith said: “Cumbernauld Environmental Society has gone from strength to strength over the last year and we are continuing to work on a number of environmental projects throughout Cumbernauld.

“These trees will make a welcome improvement to our town as we work to build on the Beautiful Scotland Silver award of last year.

“Tree planting is a fantastic and fun way for us to do something lasting in our local area. We hope our trees will make a real difference to everyone who will see them.” he added.

Cumbernauld Environmental Society will hold their next meeting at Cumbernauld College on Tuesday, February 21, at 7.15pm to discuss promotion of the environmental work done across Cumbernauld, and all individuals and groups with similar environmental interests are welcome to attend.

You can get further information on Cumbernauld Environmental Society on their website at www.cumbernauldenvironment.org.uk or by calling 01236 738311.

Meanwhile any other group that wishes to access free saplings is asked to contact www.jubileewoods.org.uk/treepacks
