Olympic dream is over

THE Olympic dream is over for a Cumbernauld footballer who has been forced to withdraw from the competition because of injury.

Ifeoma Dieke, known to friends as Iffy, made the history books last week by representing Great Britain in the nation’s first ever women’s football team.

Sadly the 31-year-old sustained a serious knee injury during Saturday’s 3-0 win over Cameroon at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

She previously helped the side to a 1-0 victory in the opener against New Zealand but the FA confirmed they suspect she has ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament.

Hope Powell, Team GB manager, said: “This is devastating news for Iffy, and for the rest of the team. Iffy had settled into the squad so well and had quickly become an integral part of our success so far.

“I am sure she has the character to return to full fitness over time, but it is obviously a very sad moment for her and for Team GB.

“I am sure the rest of the squad will want to wish her a speedy recovery.”

The News and Chronicle spoke to the defender, from South Carbrain, before she played her first match against New Zealand at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium last Wednesday.
