Our royal anniversary edition to mark Queen’s accession to the throne

Queen Elizabeth II, who succeeded to the throne on February 6, 1952

THIS week marked the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s ascension to the throne, which took place automatically on February 6, 1952 with the sudden death of her father King George VI.

She is now the second-longest reigning monarch in British history, after Queen Victoria – the only other sovereign to have celebrated a Diamond Jubilee.

Elizabeth’s official coronation was held 16 months later, in June 1953, to allow time for preparations and a period of mourning for the late king, who was recently played by Colin Firth in the film “The King’s Speech”.

To mark the Queen’s succession to the throne, your Cumbernauld News and Kilsyth Chronicle is including a special anniversary supplement which takes a look back at the Queen’s reign and her visits to the local area.

It’s out now - don’t miss it!
