OUTBREAK!

THREE pupils and a teacher at a Condorrat school have swine flu. St Helen's Primary was closed last Thursday - a day earlier than planned.

This reversed a previous decision following diagnosis of the first two cases that the school should remain open till the end of term.

But on Thursday Dr Harpreet Kohli, director of public health medicine, NHS Lanarkshire, said: "A further pupil at St. Helen's Primary School in Condorrat, Cumbernauld, has been confirmed as having influenza A (H1N1).

"Antivirals will be distributed to the children and staff who have been identified as having sufficient close contact with this pupil as to put them at possible risk of contracting this disease. In addition, given that the school is due to close on Friday, a decision has been taken in collaboration with North Lanarkshire Council education personnel that the school and nursery will close."

On Tuesday Dr Lesley Armitage, consultant in public health medicine, added: "A total of four people at St Helen's Primary School have been confirmed as having influenza A (H1N1). All parents and carers of the pupils have been provided with advice and guidance on what they should do if their child develops flu-like symptoms.

"NHS Lanarkshire would like to reassure parents, pupils and staff that the risk of developing serious illness is low.

"Anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms should stay at home to limit contact with others and should seek medical advice from their GP (8am-6pm Monday to Friday) or NHS 24 if outwith this period (08454 24 24 24)."

ONE worker at the HMRC office in Cumbernauld has been tested for possible swine flu infection, the News has been told.

But a spokeswoman said there would be no need to close the office as there is no contact with the public. Staff have been given appropriate guidance, she added.
