Quiz me quick
OH WHAT a night! That's the verdict on a charity sports quiz which was revived after a decade and raised £1000 for charity.
The 2003 Jimmy Dunn Memorial Quiz was held at its time-served venue of the Cumbernauld Social Club and attracted more than 40 teams who brainstormed their way through 10 rounds of 10 questions all the way to a nail-biting finish which required no fewer than TWO tie breakers to judge the winners.
Eventually a darts team from The Weavers in Condorrat were awarded first place.
Two teams tied for second place, namely local boys The Donkeys and another team calling themselves Ziggy's Boys.
A quiz tradition which was continually honoured throughout its 13 year history was to welcome a celebrity guest as quizmaster - who would also participate in a banter-fuelled question and answer session at the interval.
This highly popular trend saw big names like Chic Young, Dougie Donnelly and boxer Jim Watt take the helm, plus the regula quizmaster, Rangers legend John Grieg.
Last week's event saw Clyde FC manager Alan Kernaghan and ex-Rangers and Motherwell star Tom Forsyth take on that role and the audience had the chance to hear their opinion on a wide array of subjects.
Davy Wilson, who organised the competition, can finally rest easy now the weeks of planning this stellar event have drawn to a close and his only task now is to make sure that the event's favourite charities such as Stratchcarron Hospice and Yorkhill Hospital get the cash donated by the big-hearted teams and the audience.
Despite the mammoth effort involved in co-ordinating such an ambitious fundraising drive, Davy said that it was a pleasure to revive what really was a fixture in the town's sporting calender and that he had been touched by the assistance he had received from various local businesses and organisations. These included sponsors Jim Dickson Tyres and Ian S. Smart.
``Many thanks to everyone who donated prizes and to Condorrat Social Club Committee, Condorrat Quiz Team and all the staff on duty on the evening, plus the Cumbernauld News for its support,'' said Davy.
He added ``It was great to see so many old friends — and hopefully a lot of new ones — who came out and supported the quiz, considering the last event was in 1996. It's now very much back on the sporting calender - so, we'll see everyone around at the same time in 2004."
He had this final message for everyone: "Thanks to everyone — and have a great sporting year!''
