Royal role for former Cumbernauld politician

A FORMER Cumbernauld politician is returning to public service - after scooping a plum role which will see him represent the Queen on landmark occasions.
Longtime Labour man Gerry McElroy (64) has been appointed Deputy Lieutenant for the county of Dunbartonshire after being appointed to the position by Admiral Mike Gregory earlier this month.
Council functions, 100th birthday occasions and anniversaries are just some of the events that will be appearing in Mr McElroy’s diary as he settles into this coveted new role.
Mr McElroy who has three decades of service as a councillor behind him said he is keen to lend his support whenever he is needed.
He is retired, and lives in Lomond Drive.
He told the News and Chronicle: “This is a great honour for myself and my family. It allows me to continue to contribute to public service and I look forward to assisting the Lord Lieutenant in any duties he asks me to do “
