Talked about clock

The St Enoch clock

The St Enoch clock

Discussions over the ownership of the St Enoch’s Clock caused a mild stir at the recent Local Area Partnership meeting.

The clock, which has finally been restored and is on display in the town centre, was donated to the people of Cumbernauld by Glasgow businessman Raymond Gillies in the 1970s.

However, while Cumbernauld Community Forum chairman Billy Lees was commending North Lanarkshire Council’s work to repair the clock at the LAP meeting last Thursday, Councillor Tom Johnston raised the question of ownership of the piece and said that the council should have clarified this.

The topic descended into a back and forth between SNP councillor Johnston and the convener of the meeting, Labour Councillor Hogg, but was resolved when Martin Dickson, local regeneration manager, stated that a written decision on ownership will be requested.

Whoever finally owns this clock should seriously consider re-location, In my Opinion, it is a Farce, and a tragedy that this beautiful piece of history should be left in such Isolation, unseen by many, uncared for, and open to Vandalism if it is left in its current position, Would'nt it be Beautiful in the New part of the Antonine Centre,? as a Great meeting place, (perhaps, with seats below it) looked after, talked about, and viewed by many. I remain hopeful that this will be achieved sooner rather than later ! yours hopefully, John Bogie. 30b. Braeface Road, Seafar, G67 1HJ
