We’re living in fear

THE London helicopter crash last week confirmed a local man’s fears that a similar incident could happen on his own doorstep.

David McClelland watched in horror with the rest of the UK as news reports came in that a helicopter crashed into a crane on top of a 50-storey building in Vauxhall leaving two people dead and nine others injured.

The incident, which happened on Wednesday, January 16, prompted Mr McClelland to call the News and Chronicle as he has been fighting with Cumbernauld Airport for years over their chosen flight path which is above his home.

The 67-year-old, who lives on Kelt Road, Banknock, believes disaster could strike at the airport, which is just under two miles from his home.

He is also concerned over safety because it is people who are training to fly that is operating the helicopters or planes.

He said: “They fly at 500 feet but I worry if it is a misty day, they would could go lower.

“There is 200ft pylons all around the back of my house and it is a concern that a training helicopter or plane could hit one of them.

“I have been arguing with the airport for a long time that something could happen, it may never happen but look at what happened in London.”
