Many happy returns to a real home from home

A care home for adults with learning disabilities in East Dunbartonshire held a party for former residents and employees to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

John Street House Care Home Service in Kirkintilloch provides physical, emotional, intellectual and social support for adults from across East Dunbartonshire with learning disabilities.

Guests were invited to take a trip down memory lane by wandering through the unit and look at a specially-created wall frieze by current residents and employees which contained information, events, life stories and photos of service users and employees from 1985 to the present day.

They also enjoyed some tea, coffee, snacks and even a slice of birthday cake.

Councillor Michael O’Donnell, convenor of the Social Work Committee for East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “It was fascinating to take a look at the wall frieze which highlights some of the excellent work that has been carried out at John Street over the past 30 years.

“The ethos of the house is to enable the residents to live their life as a valued member of the community and to promote individual abilities as much as is safely and reasonably possible.

“The service users enjoy an ownership of their surroundings and have a significant influence in the decision making processes within the house.
