AN AMBITIOUS redevelopment plan could boost the quality of community amenities in Cumbernauld.

North Lanarkshire Council wants to replace the aging Muirfield Centre in central Cumbernauld with a brand new facility which would also provide an area for small businesses to set up shop.

The council recently applied for Scottish Government funding towards an £8m project to create the Cumbernauld Community Enterprise Centre, a facility for community groups and small businesses which would replace the current Muirfield Centre.

The council has done extensive research into the project to strengthen its case for a £4m grant and is talking to local community groups and tenants about the building. A more widespread public consultation has been earmarked for early 2014.

A council spokeswoman said: “Discussions are also continuing with other agencies and funders, including Campsies Cumbernauld, to generate the other £4 million required for the project.”
