THE polls are currently open for the local government elections.
This is your opportunity to appoint representatives to North Lanarkshire Council. Councillors make critically important decisions on how the local services each of us use every day are run, from schools and libraries to rubbish collection and sports facilities. The News and Chronicle will tweet all the results for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth’s council wards live from tomorrow’s count in Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, as they are announced.
Also, reports have reached us that some voters never got their polling cards in the post - we remind all readers that these are not required for you to be able to vote. You don’t even need to bring ID - just go to your polling station and give your name and address.
The election is via proportional representation, with voters listing their preferred candidates in order. You can vote for as many or as few candidates as you wish, so long as you clearly state your order of preference.
In the previous contest the SNP had the most councillors elected locally, but rumours are that a number of seats will change hands, with some long-serving councillors possibly being removed. There are also more local independent candidates than ever before - how much support will they get?
Polling stations will remain open until 10pm tonight.
