A GROUP of students at Cumbernauld College who volunteered to collect Christmas gifts for needy children overseas have been recognised for their achievement.

The nine students from the Skills Development Scotland College Learning Programme have been awarded certificates by the Saltire Awards, after taking part in Operation Christmas Child in December 2012.

The News and Chronicle previously reported on the team who collected more than 85 shoeboxes which were filled with gifts for children in Serbia and Belarus to open on Christmas day.

The students accepted donations from staff and students, Asda Cumbernauld and Tesco Cumbernauld, Kildrum and Camstradden primary schools as well as receiving knitted goods from Hillcrest sheltered housing tenants.

Heather Urquhart, acting principal at Cumbernauld College, said: “We are thrilled that the students have been recognised by the Saltire Awards.’’
