There has been an increase in reports of thefts from unlocked cars and homes, police in Cumbernauld have warned. Around 70 incidents of this nature have been reported during the period April 1 to May 6.

Figures revealed that 24 thefts took place from insecure homes. Meanwhile, 26 thefts were reported in relation to unlocked motor vehicles.

Police are therefore urging residents to follow simple steps to protect themselves from thefts.

Householders should check windows and doors are locked; keep house keys and other valuables out of sight and do not leave any items unattended outside your home such as tools or ladders.

Car owners should not leave their keys in a place that is visible.

Motorists should also lock their car including sunroof and windows. You should not leave any valuable items in your car and always park in a well lit area.
