Children star in primary games

MORE than 1200 children took part in the fifth annual North Lanarkshire Council primary games at Wishaw sports centre.

They competed in sports including athletics, basketball, badminton, football, rugby, golf, tennis, judo and boccia.

The games promote sport and physical activity, with schools putting in many weeks of preparation beforehand.

This year's games were run with an Olympic theme, focused on the Olympic values which were displayed on the back of the participants t-shirts.

Councillor Jim Logue, Convener of Learning and Leisure services, said: "The primary games have been a great experience for everyone taking part especially as some of these children will take part in the 2011 International Children's Games.

"North Lanarkshire Council is committed to encouraging people to live healthy lifestyles and to take part in more exercise. These games, along with the good work taking place in our schools and by North Lanarkshire Leisure, form part of our approach to ensuring that our children are introduced to fun sports at an early age."
