Colts mark first in Central Region

CUMBERNAULD Colts have won an award from the Scottish Football Association.

The Colts are the first Central Region club to receive the SFA Development Quality Mark.

This is a new initiative intended to promote grassroots football and the training of players, coaches and volunteers.

Eligible clubs must have a minimum of four teams at different age groups and ensure that they have a coach with level 3 coaching qualification for each team. Among the other criteria set for this level the club must also have specialists in place such as a goalkeeping coach, welfare officer and coach co-ordinator while the club must be able to demonstrate that they have a two-year plan in place.

Presenting the award to Stewart McKenzie, chairpperson of Cumbernauld Colts, SFA Regional Manager Andy Gilchrist said: "We are delighted to announce the first Development Quality Mark Club in the region and particularly pleased that it is Cumbernauld Colts.

"I have been impressed with the enthusiasm shown by all connected with the club in their efforts to gain this award, which has been a huge challenge for a club that has provision for football from under-8s through to under-19s."

In a further boost to the club Colts' under-19 squad has been kitted out with fantastic new home strips, thanks to the Coatbridge outlet of a leading restaurant chain.

The sponsorship by Frankie and Benny's, which has a restaurant at the Showcase Leisure Park on Langmuir Road, is part of a Scotland-wide support programme for youth football being undertaken by the company in association with the SFA.

Stuart MacKenzie, of Cumbernauld Colts FC, said: "The club is delighted with the new home strips and would like to thank Frankie & Benny's for their support".

Danielle MacNab, deputy manager at Frankie and Benny's Coatbridge restaurant, added: "We are very pleased to be supporting Cumbernauld Colts in this way, and we wish the club every success for 2007/8 and for further seasons to come".

After being presented with the strips, members of the club were treated to a complimentary meal in Frankie and Benny's.
