Mathieson Memorial Trophy, semi-final

A NARROW victory over higher league opponents will see Cumbernauld-based Drumpellier Thistle face Premier Division Stenhousemuir on Saturday, June 1 at Camelon Juniors in the final of the Mathieson Cup.

Drumpellier, who play in the second division of the Stirling and District AFA, had to withstand some early pressure with Shanks going close on two occasions.

It wasn’t until the 23rd minute when a back header narrowly slipped wide of the Maddiston goal that Drumpellier produced any threat. Maddiston should have heeded the warning as five minutes later Galloway nipped in behind a static defence to score from close range.

The lead was short lived as Cowan turned on the edge of the box to fire a dipping shot well out of the reach of Shaw for the equaliser.

Just before half time Angus fired over the Maddiston goal from good position.

The second half saw Drumpellier grow more confident. A great move saw Whyteside curl a shot just wide of the Maddiston goal.

With ten minutes to go Angus intercepted a poor pass and lofted the ball over the stranded keeper for the winner.

Drumpellier were now dominating play and MacKay had to be at his best to turn away a close range effort from Angus.
