Mathieson Cup, quarter-final

After being knocked out of this cup at the same stage last season, Barrhill were looking to go one better.

However, the local side did everything but put the ball into the net, and the visitors had only two chances throughout the game.

The first half ended with no scoring, but Barrhill should have gone in three up. Jack missed a penalty which cost the home side dear, which if he had scored would probably have seen them run out winners.

The second half saw the visitors’ keeper in good form and the goalposts taking a battering.

Johnson saw a great header crash off the bar and a Divine 25-yard free-kick thumped the inside of the post.

Shots were hitting defenders and going to safety.

On any other day Barrhill could have scored five or six, but this was not their day in front of goal.

Man of the match award went to Divine.

Barrhill: Stevenson, Fulton, pender, McPherson, Johnson, McLean, Malone, Jack, Divine, Black, Hopkins. Subs: Byrne, O’Neill, Quinn and Finlayson.
